Itau’s econometric model on the FIFA World Cup

Serious economists don’t think exclusively about money and business.. they also use their skills and knowledge to fun stuff as answering the question: what team has more chances to win the FIFA World Cup. Itau’s team of economists created a model and collected data from all the FWCs since 1994.

Three key factors are considered: quality of the team, tradition and the support of the fans.

What did they came out with? Brazil, Spain, Argentina and Germany should meet in the semi-finals. But as good economists, they know that the “model” is far from perfect and free will and chance will have the final word in this game.

Bottom line: it is fun to play with numbers.. so the model and full report is available on Itau’s website.

We are also studying the effects that the World Cup will have on the Brazilian society. It will help us if you can answer our survey.
